Elderley Eastwood residents will have the chance to twist and shout in a series of events this month.

Broxtowe Borough Council have set up activities such as dances, game shows and a day at the races in order to celebrate national Older Peoples Week.

There will also be Spanish, French and Chinese celebrations as well as magic shows and a last of the proms event.

Councillor Eric Kerry, portfolio holder for housing, said: “We are incredibly proud to be hosting a packed programme of events again this year to celebrate Older People’s Day on October 1, to help combat loneliness, negative attitudes and out-dated stereotypes of older people, as well as encourage volunteering.

“Everyone has an older person in their life who is special to them, whether it’s a parent, grandparent, aunty or uncle, neighbour or friend and it’s important that we celebrate our older residents and the contributions they make to our local community.”

The series of events is part of the council’s retirement living scheme, which offers self-contained flats or bungalows, and weekly entertainment for those aged 60 and over.

This is the ninth year Older People’s Day has been celebrated by the council and it aims to encourage different generations to share their skills and experiences.

Weekly entertainment is organised for all residents within each of the schemes including, games nights, craft activities, fitness sessions, organised day trips, and much more.

The celebrations will take place between September 28 and October 3.

Places are limited so booking is advised for each of the events.
