As the outgoing headteacher of Saint John Houghton Catholic School prepares to stand down after 12 years, Joan McCarthy told us this week what she hopes to bring to the Kirk Hallam school.

Joan, who lives in Derby, is originally from Ireland and is deputy head of a Catholic school in Birmingham.

She said she is looking forward to building on the reputation of the school, which regularly comes out on top in Ilkeston for exam results.

“It’s very much about moving the school from being a good school to an outstanding school,” she explained.

She has plans to involve the school, which is helping the Arena Food Bank scheme, with the community more.

“The food bank is typical of what we want to do. It isn’t an isolated building here – we welcome anyone who wants to see what we’re about and we’re here to listen to what the community has to suggest.”
