Hot temperatures and a drought in rain over the last two weeks has made grass very dry, meaning fires can spread easier and quicker.

A spokesperson for Notts Fire said: “With the current heatwave continuing we would strongly urge people to avoid having bonfires – be it in parks, gardens or other open spaces.

“The ground, grass and vegetation is extremely dry at present and this can cause fires to catch and spread much quicker.

“What might seem like a harmless garden waste fire could easily spread to grass, overhanging trees, fences and sheds – and even spread to the home, too, which can have really dangerous consequences.”
