A GROUNDSMAN in Nuthall has retired after 22 years.

Bill Greathead worked for Nuthall Parish Council and looked after the Basil Russell playing field, the cemetery and the Temple Centre grounds.

Councillors threw him a farewell bash, which was attended by local sports clubs and his family.

Council clerk Sue Stack said they were ‘lost without him’.

“He has been a part of the furniture and suddenly he’s not there,” she added. “He knew so much and we’ve been lost without him.”

Bill, 63, was head groundsman for the last 12 years.

Before working in Nuthall he was the groundsman at the Newstead Estate for 18 years.

Councillors said he was hard working and reliable and described him as ‘Jack of all trades, master of most.’
