I DON’T know about anybody else but I am fed up of receiving unsolicited text messages and calls on my mobile and house phones from companies offering their services.
A lot of them seem to be from people purporting to work for claims companies.
I remember receiving a text message every day for two weeks offering me help to get compensation for my accident. The only problem was I hadn’t had an accident.
These calls and messages always scream scam to me so it was with some trepidation I answered a phone call from an unknown number the other day.
‘Mr Hemmett?’ inquired the voice on the other end of the line. Without thinking I answered yes but as soon as they revealed they were offering claim support I said no thank you and hung up.
I thought nothing more until I had a second call from the same number the next day. Ignoring it I let it go to answerphone before returning the call to see what would happen.
I was diverted through to a seemingly genuine recording telling me that if I wanted to have my phone number removed from their records then I simply had to call a different 0845 number.
However, when I did that, the call was strangely diverted through to a woman’s mobile phone who knew nothing about this company.
This poor woman had apparently been inundated with calls from angry customers but she was as in the dark as me.
As a result I contacted Consumer Direct and handed all the details to them who have now vowed to pass it on to Trading Standards to investigate.
So my advice to all of you is first of all to be careful what information you give out to people over the phone, especially when they have called you. You have no guarantee they are who they say they are.
The second part is more of a plea. When you get these phone calls and text messages make sure you contact Trading Standards or Consumer Direct yourself.
Unless we take it upon ourselves to report these problems, nothing will ever get done and innocent people out there will be at risk of being scammed.
