A chance meeting in a bank and a first date at a dance led to romance and a marriage that has stood the test of time for Jeff and Audrey Garthwaite, who have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

The Nuthall couple, who courted for three years before tying the knot at Hucknall Parish Church, marked the 50-year milestone with a party at Nuthall Parish Hall.

In attendance were family members from Wellington, New Zealand and two of their bridesmaids, as well as Eastwood Collieries Male Voice Choir, which staged an enjoyable concert for the devoted couple.

Mr Garthwaite, a member of the choir for 35-years, took his place in the second tenor section and under the baton of musical director Liz Moulder, delighted the wedding anniversary guests with a choral tribute to a “lovely couple”.

Born and bred in Eastwood, Jeff, 80, attended Henry Mellish School in Bulwell before taking up a career with the TSB bank where he worked for 40-years, retiring in the position of bank manager.

Audrey,84,hails from Hucknall where she was a pupil at Spring Street Primary and Beardall Street Schools, and during a varied working career was employed as a provisions manager.

While Jeff’s main interest is with the choir, Audrey was actively involved for many years with St Patrick’s Wednesday Club, Nuthall Local History Society and the Nuthall branch of the Mothers’ Union.

Blessed with two children and four grandchildren,Mr.and Mrs Garthwaite, who have lived in Horsednale Avenue for 38-years, agreed that their lives have been enriched by a wonderful family and a wealth of good friends.
