It’s hammer time at former ironworks

Three ironworkers work away a t a pipe in this picture, which could be 80 years old, according to its owner.

George Chapman, 82, brought this photograph in but said he knew very little about it.

On the reverse are the names of the three men working at Stanton.

They are, from left to right, John Shaw, Jack Payne and Joe Potts.

Stanton Ironworks was once the biggest employer of Ilkeston men.

Now the land where the furnaces once stood is set to become a 1,950-home village if plans by site owner Saint-Gobain get the go-ahead.
