A group of teenage girls known as ‘the Eastwood Angels’ ran the Race for Life and raised £500 for Cancer Research.

Denbie Sanderson, Sommer Bexton, Paige Middleton and Kayleigh Clifford took part in the night-time charity event in York dressed in t-shirts with luminous graffiti, lights and bright coloured bracelets.

The girls had been working with Nottinghamshire County Council’s Targeted Support and Youth Justice Team in weekly sessions at Eastwood Youth Club, and the race was the finale event to a successful six months.

The work with the outreach team focused their energies and interests on something positive.

Cllr Liz Plant, vice-chairman for children’s, families and young people’s services at the county council said: “The Race for Life event was a superb finale to what has been quite a journey in recent months for this group of girls.

“We have worked with them to firstly build trust, then help them to develop vital skills so they can have more confidence. They are not only benefiting personally from their achievements – they are helping others now as well.

“These projects produce wonderful outcomes,” she added.

The girls worked with a graffiti artist to design their own t-shirts, and made bracelets which they were then able to sell to boost the sponsorship raised.
