Madness and mayhem reigned supreme at Selston High School where a non-uniform day gave a timely boost to a £50,000 charity drive by teachers Chris Ridley and Steve Taylor.
Spurred on by headteacher Kevin Guiderman, supporters dug deep to raise almost £2,000 during a fundraising day to kicksttart a drive which aims to net tens of thousands of pounds for two worthy charities — The Daisy Garland Trust and MIND.
In July and August, the teachers will attempt to complete 2,278 miles ride of the Tour De France course.
“This has been called “ The Big Job” but to them it is more like “Mission Impossible!”, said Mr Guiderman. “But despite their fears I and many others are confident that they will achieve their goal and we are behind them every step of the way.”
Supporters at the school were requested to wear purple for the fundraising dayday (a colour which relates to the Daisy Garland Trust ) and many went the extra mile by having faces, nails and body parts decorated to stand out in the crowds.
Stalls did brisk business and crowds gathered outdoors to pay for the privilege of throwing wet sponges at the likes of Mr Guiderman and colleagues including Catherine Gordon and Sarah Nelson, among others. Some paid extra to pour a full bucket of water over the victims.
Volunteers and parents as well as pupils and staff, sold home made cakes and biscuits, jewellery, hand crafted goods, toiletries and cards.
The event, the first of many planned in the weeks ahead at the school, served as a tremendous fillip to Chris and Steve.
“When we embarked on this initiative we both knew that it was going to be an awesome challenge,“ said Steve.
“The support we have been given at the non-uniform event has been magnificent and we would like to thank everyone who has played a part in its success.”
“ If we manage to reach our target of £50,000 the money will be invaluable to the two charities which are close to our hearts.
“My Grandmother has dementia and his currently being looked after in a care home and Steve’s daughter has epilepsy which were the reasons for choosing MIND and the Daisy Garland respectively.”
