The fanfare opening of the new Boyes store in Eastwood is being touted as the start of a revival in the town.

Shoppers queued up for the launch of the department store on Nottingham Road in the former Co-op premises.

It has created more than 20 new jobs and was officially opened by managing director Andrew Boyes and store manager Tom Walker with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting last Friday.

And the leader of Eastwood Town Council, Cllr David Bagshaw, believes it was a very significant day.

He said: “With Boyes and the new Wetherspoon pub (The Lady Chatterley) soon opening, we are going part of the way towardgetting back to a vibrant Eastwood.

“We can only thank them for coming in and enhancing things.

“It is part of a new vibrancy for Eastwood and I am hopeful it will encourage others to come in and people to come in and go round the other shops because we have got some nice ones.

“We have got some lovely retailers who are real Eastwood people who want the town to do well.

“When I am out and about people come to me and they are interested in Eastwood doing well.

“I can only see Eastwood going up and up.”

Eastwood also has a new market and Cllr Bagshaw believes that another key to improving things in the future is tackling parking charges in the town.
