Citizens’ Advice gets more cash

Eastwood Citizen’s Advice Bureau is celebrating after receiving its second huge grant this year.

The bureau – which has been desperately struggling over the last few years – has been awarded more than £370,000 from the Big Lottery Fund.

Manager Sue Malowska said it was ‘fantastic news’ that has come just at the right time to help people with post-Christmas debt.

Ms Malowska said: “This is fantastic news. With demands for our service higher than ever, getting the right advice at the right time can be a lifeline for people. It will make a huge difference to their lives.”

This latest good news means the advice service – which has offices in Eastwood and Beeston – can employ 30 more volunteers and help people who are said to be ‘suicidal’ over money problems.

In a recent Citizen’s Advice survey the service found clients were ‘increasingly having to face the choice between keeping warm or buying food’ and most concerning of all, there was an increase in the number of clients talking about suicide as a result of their financial situation.

In total five East Midlands projects shared £938,000 in Big Lottery Funding, with the advice bureau being awarded one of the highest amounts.

Back in October broxtowe Citizens’ Advice Bureau received a grant of £350,000 from the Big Lottery, which went towards working with partner agencies such as the local domestic violence group.

In 2011 when the service’s funding was cut, it was saved at the 11th hour by a national Government grant of £80,000.

It has received other smaller grants keeping it afloat since.
