Yee-haw! The Dukes of Hazzard are back, but this time it is a group of staff from a local firm who are behind the wheel of the ‘General Lee’ for a gruelling 2,000-mile charity challenge.
Four employees from Birchwood Price Tools (BPT) in Giltbrook have taken on the roles of characters from the 1980s TV and set off for a four-and-a-half day round trip to Hamburg in Germany on Wednesday (June 25).
They are raising funds for Prostate Cancer UK and have already raised £3,500 towards their £5,000 target.
It is all part of an effort featuring 25 teams and is being run by Keyline Builders’ merchants. The overall aim of the 80s-themed rally is to raise a massive £500,000.
Dressed up as characters from the American TV series, the team from BPT set off in a BMW 7 series painted up to mimic the famous orange Dodge Charger known as the General Lee in the TV show and subsequent movie.
Taking on the challenge are Lee Hankins as Bo Duke, Paul Simpson as Luke Duke, Sam Norman as Daisy Duke and Rebecca Spicer as Miss Rosco P Coltrane.
The Dukes of Hazzard-themed team, named ‘Team Scruffs’, set off from their base in Giltbrook to join 25 other teams from other businesses for the challenge.
Prior to their journey, however, the team received a scare when the General Lee developed ‘catastrophic’ gearbox failure.
Preventing the team’s trip from being de-railed however was Croft Auto Services in Hucknall, who sourced and fitted a replacement gearbox.
It meant they were able to set off on time.
“Without Croft Auto Services help, the trip would certainly have had to have been cancelled, we really can’t thank him enough,” commented Paul Simpson, UK Sales Director at BPT.
Prior to the trip, Rebecca Spicer, said: “We have done a lot of fundraising for the cause so far, including charity auctions and raffles, and we have raised £3,500 out of our £5,000 target so far.
“We are all very excited about the trip, although the car died on us at one point, we have some daft rules in place which includes eight hours of country and western music.
“It’s all for a good cause, we intend to be climbing out of the windows during the trip in proper Dukes of Hazzard style.”
