From its humble beginnings seven years ago, when it was first set up by former Eastwood Mayor the late Jim Kenny, the Eastwood-based Breathe Easy (Nottingham West) group is flourishing and has 40-plus members attending its monthly meetings at Hilltop Catholic Church Community Centre.
Chairman Jane Reeves and Secretary Teresa Burgoyne, among others, are the driving forces behind the group which provides for the needs of people affected by serious breathing problems and all forms of lung disease.
“We welcome all-comers who are in need of support, advice, and friendship, who find it difficult to cope with their respective conditions.” said Teresa.
There is never a dull moment as the Breathe Easy team, representing the British Lung Foundation, provides a wide-ranging programme of activities and events for members.
Guest speakers make a valued contribution and recently Peter Jordan gave a talk about his five decades in the newspaper industry, which included the last 30 as a photo-journalist.
“I was impressed by the members’ obvious interest in my talk and a kind letter of appreciation sent by Teresa Burgoyne which I received afterwards,” he said.
Upcoming speakers at Breathe Easy’s next meetings include a talk by local GP Dr Lim on August 13,a visit and talk by two retired teachers on September 10 and Dr Charlotte Botton, a professor in respiratory medicine, will be the guest on October 8.
A recent grant for a sum of £1,572, from Broxtowe Lifestyle Fund has enabled Breathe Easy (Eastwood) to provide invaluable information packs for its members, while a new CD is encouraging members to carry out exercise sessions in their own homes.
Health professionals such as specialist nurses Eve Elliott and Debbie Houlier, specialist instructors Lynn Davey and Amanda Matthews, among others contribute to the success of the group.
New members who have recently joined the group said: “We have been welcomed with open arms and the kindness, support and expert advice has really helped us.”
