A family-run business is enjoying the sweet taste of success after being crowned the winner in the Advertiser’s Chip Shop of the Year award.
The Hilltop Fish Bar, on Nottingham Road in Eastwood battered its rivals in a competition voted for by our readers.
Now husband and wife duo Dimitri and Thekla Pavlos, who own the business, have been presented with a special plaque and couldn’t be more thrilled.
“We didn’t even know we’d been entered into the competition until customers came in to tell us — we were so surprised to be nominated, let alone to win,” said Dimitri, 28.
“There’s a lot of chip shops in the area, so it’s amazing news. We’re still getting over it.”
Dimitri took over the chip shop eight years ago from his father, who had run Hill Top since 1985 with Dimitri’s grandad.
He added: “Fish and chips are what I’ve grown up with so it’s good to see that what I’ve learned over the years has paid off.”
The couple, who have been married for four years, were on holiday in Cyprus when they found out.
Thekla said: “We have a wonderful team we work with that we like to refer to as our extended family.”
Two staff members, Mario Pavlov and Jan Priestley help serve up the popular lunches and dinners at the winning chippy.
“We really want to thank them as it would have been impossible without their help - Jan left us only last week and she is still a huge part of this.
“Our regular customers we obviously have to thank - we just can’t wait to get the plaque up and show it off.”
Dimitri and Thekla are also expecting their first baby later this year, she added: “Hopefully the chippy will be around for more generations to come.”
Advertiser editor Martin Hutton said: “Everyone loves to tuck into a top-quality plate of fish and chips.
“We have some brilliant chip shops in the area. But clearly there is something special on offer at Hilltop. Congratulations to the team.”
