Community First grants

Thousands of pounds worth of grants have been awarded to Eastwood groups as part of an ongoing initiative to ensure work in the community continues to thrive.

Community First has pumped £8,488 into ten different organisations to help fund their work. The money was the second installment of a pot that will see £33,910 invested into the community over the course of four years.

The Community First panel invited all successful groups to attend a presentation night. Cllr Keith Longdon, a member of the Community First panel for Eastwood South, made presentations, while Sarah Taylor, a fellow panel member, provided the audience with information about the triumphs of each project.

Sarah said: “It was a great celebration of the wonderful initiatives that are happening in our town, we should be very proud”

The Community First panel consists of six community members with various roles and vested interests in the local area. Alongside Cllr Longdon and Sarah, who owns her own business, is Josie Forrest of Age Concern, local business owner Mark Fretwell and finally local residents David Townes and Bill Howard.

Successful groups included: Age Concern Eastwood, which was awarded £1,250 to support lunch clubs for the over-50s; Eastwood Arcadians Marching Band were presented with £1,000 to help buy new instruments and uniforms; Pheonix Clubbers landed the same amount to help with work with young adults with disabilities; Communities Against Poverty were also given £1,000 to support their workshops and training for young people; and FRESH also receieved the same figure for their support of young people and toddler groups; Eastwood Tennis Club was given £1,000 too.

Meanwhile, the Youth Pool Academy was given £800, while Communities Together was handed £600.

Finally, The Eco Club and Breathe Easy were awarded £520 and £322 respectively to aid their projects within the area.

A further £13,000 will be invested over the course of 2014/15 in two different bundles.
