Parents with children at a Cotmanhay nursery facing the axe have been thrown a lifeline after a potential new venue has been found.

The Pre-School Learning Alliance nursery (PLA), based at the Cotmanhay Children’s Centre, will close on December 31 leaving many parents with nowhere for their children to go.

Derbyshire County Council said this week that they hope the PLA can continue to rpovide its childcare service in the area based at the Pavillion on Shirebrook Close.

Campaigner, Elizabeth Law, said: “It’s great news if the nursery will be able to carry on.

“This is definitely a step in the right direction and an excellent outcome for lots of parents

“It proves what people power can do.”

The nursery has twice escaped closure with extensions being granted first until October 31 and then until the new year.

The PLA blames rising costs and falling numbers for the move.

If Ofsted deem the new venue suitable it is hoped that the new set up wil be up and running by the new year.

A spokesman for Derbyshire County Council, who have been working with the PLA to find a solution to the problem, said: “We’ve found an available building nearby – the Pavillion on Shirebrook Close which is owned by Erewash Borough Council and is within half a mile of the Cotmanhay Infant and Junior Schools.”

“The PLA will be able to offer sessions for children aged two to five years and is now working with Ofsted to make sure that the building can be opened early in the New Year.”

But the new base will only offer care for two to five-year-olds, leaving some parents, like Elizabeth, having to make alternative arrangements.

She said: “My youngest is 14 months and I’ll be really disappointed if I can’t keep sending her to the PLA but at least there will still be affordable child care in the area for parents with older children.”
