LETTER: Fury over wind turbine

Jon Beeson from Severn Trent Water shows us around the new wind turbine that has been erected at the Newthorpe site.

Jon Beeson from Severn Trent Water shows us around the new wind turbine that has been erected at the Newthorpe site.

I’m emailing you about the new wind turbine which I believe is a monstrosity and have nicknamed “ The Thing”.

I was one of those people who protested to the council and everyone I have spoken to has not got a good word for it. I think local and surrounding towns were not consulted sufficiently. That the casting vote was made by Cllr Steve Barber, who lives miles away, is in my view beyond words. Was this looked into properly with this being far too close, in my view, to residential properties? I have my doubts.

I believe it is totally out of proportion with the surrounding area, enclosed is a picture taken from Tulip Road Awsworth (see right), in my opinion it just blots the landscape.

It begs the question what it is going to do to house prices. Will Severn Trent or Broxtowe Council compensate us?

An article in the Mail on Sunday on a survey by the London School of Economics which looked at the sale of a million properties within 1.2 miles of a wind turbine found that on average the value of homes dropped by 11 percent. What about a reduction in rates for this eyesore?

The Broxtowe Council planning committee should resign. Severn Tent has said it will reduce costs, will this be passed on to the already hard hit consumer?

How long will it be before this thing breaks even and starts paying for itself? It must have been s substantial cost in the first place.

We have had to put up with the Ikea retail park which at times renders it almost impossible to get to Eastwood or the motorway, at times taking over half an hour, and now this. Come on Broxtowe council do the right thing and withdraw the permission and let’s get this “Thing” taken down now.

Extremely Angry, Awsworth
