Once he had gained their trust, and when alone with each of them on parkland in the local area he indecently assaulted and raped the boys, who were no older than 13 years old, and forced them to perform sexual acts upon him on numerous occasions.

Underwood was arrested in January 2015 after a relative of one of his victims went to police and said the victim had confided in her about the incidents.

Detective Inspector Nikki Smith, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Underwood exploited the good nature of two young boys by enticing them with gifts in order to commit horrific acts of sexual violence.

“He manipulated them and betrayed their trust in the cruellest and vilest way possible and a sentence of 13 years in prison cannot begin to truly help repair the damage his actions will have done to the lives of his victims.

“Such was his control over them that not even the rumours that it seems were circulating about him in the local community at the time of these offences could stop him from gaining access to them.

“This case should hopefully send out the clearest possible message to victims of historical sexual offences that the police are here to listen as well as to investigate, and that we will do all within the powers at our disposal to gather the evidence needed to bring offenders justice, no matter how long ago the crime was committed.”
