The Bevin Boys lived at a hostel, which was a former army camp, in Derby Road, Eastwood.

They were conscripted to work in the mines as an alternative to joining the armed forces.

Recruits were taken from the church and the lads club. Three of them started a Bible Class at St Mary’s Church.
