Work is under way to create the ‘public pleasure ground and swimming baths’ in Eastwood that would be known as Beggarlee Baths.
The waste land on which the site was created was once an old mill. So impressive was the project that it was even reported in the media in London.
Our photo shows a group of men hard at work excavating the land. Among those who helped with the project were the Eastwood Ambulance Training Corps and the Boys’ Brigade.
They were given points for the number of hours they worked and these were converted towards the cost of a summer holiday.
The baths were eventually opened in May 1913.
