From parrots and chickens to labradors and a bow-tie wearing pooch......the Advertiser’s new Pet of the Year competition got off to a flying start at its first photo shoots.

More than 50 owners turned out with their beloved animals at the Lawrence Veterinary Centre on Nottingham Road, Eastwood last Friday and Sunday where top snapper John Booth, of John Booth Photography, was behind the camera.

John, of Ilkeston, declared it a ‘great turnout’ and urged locals to make sure they continue to enter the contest by going along to upcoming photo shoots.

All you need to do if you would like to enter your pet for the competition is fill in the coupon that is printed in this week’s paper and pop along.

The competition is already capturing the imagination of locals with prizes up for grabs in two categories — ‘cats and dogs’ and ‘out of the box and cage’.

A top three will be decided in each section with the winner scooping a £100 voucher from John Booth Photography, and a £50 voucher from Lawrence Veterinary Centre; second place getting £50 and £25 vouchers from the respective sponsors and third place a £20 and a £10 vouchers.

The top three will also scoop a canvas of the photo taken for the competition.

Once all the photos are taken you, the readers, will choose the winners.

The remaining photo shoots at the Lawrence Veterinary Centre are:

Friday May 2 (12midday to 5pm);

Saturday May 3 (from 9am to 3pm);

Saturday May 10 (9am to 3pm)
