Families who are supporting children from Belarus

Families from Underwood and Eastwood are playing their parts in bringing sunshine into the lives of the children from Belarus affected by the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster which took place in 1986.

Suzy Smith who works for John Lewis and Gemma Devine, a special needs teacher, are valued members of the Hucknall Friends of Chernobyl Children, a charity that was formed 16 years ago and looks after the needs of disadvantaged youngsters from Belarus by providing holidays with host families for a four-week period.

Suzy and her husband Peter, a carpet fitter, have been hosting for six years, while Gemma and her partner Carl Nightingale, a local builder, has grown up with “hosting” after her mother Esther Devine got involved in the charity right from the beginning.

Both Suzy and Gemma have welcomed children, both aged seven, into their respective homes, and the girls named Vika and Amelia have loved every minute of staying with their new families.

For details of the Hucknall Friends of Chernobyl Children charity contact fund-raiser Kim Challand on 0115-9639434.
