A Ripley couple celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary this week.

Sally and Harold Burns now live at the Willows care home in Ripley, where they were joined by friends and family on the special day.

Sally, 94, was born in Loscoe and Harold, 97, was born in Ripley and the pair met walking along Oxford Street in Ripley when Sally was 17 and Harold was 21;

They married on ???? at Belper Registry Office and lived at first on Loscoe Grange with Sally’s parents, before moving to Watkinson Street in Heanor and then a bungalow in Loscoe.

Harold was a miner at a number of of collieries including Ormonde, Heage

Sally was a seamstress at Aristoc Ltd in Langley Mill and then worked in the insurance business.

Grandaughter Sally said: “My grandma also belonged to the Women’s Institute. She loved flower arranging. My granddad was head boy at school, a choirboy and quite a keen boxer. He adored golf and snuff!

“They loved holidaying in Portugal and Malta and Spain - but mainly going to Skegness where they had a caravan for 50 years.”

Harold attributes his long life to happy holidays and his motto is: ‘be content in life.’

They have three children Brenda, 72, John, 70 and Christine, 65.

Followed by seven grandchildren Christopher, Justin, Laura, Sally, Helen, Rachel and Jason.

Who are in turn followed by 16 great grandchildren Gaige, Kyle, Bode, Jack, Maiden, Raphael, Oliver, Ellis, William, Edward, Theodore, Thomas, Jake, Harry, Jack and Daisy.
