Caring members of Eastwood Slimming World classes have lost pounds in weight to earn pounds in money by holding a charity challenge in support of three-year-old Theo Hunt and a £50,000 bid to help him walk.

Theo, of Underwood, featured in last week’s Advertiser. He has a rare form of cerebral palsy and was due to undergo surgery but this was axed at the 11th hour by the NHS due to funding.

However his family, friends and community have launched a fundraising initiative to help raise the necessary cash.

Spurred on by Slimming World teacher Deb Cooper, who lives in Nuthall, members took part in a sponsored weight loss challenge to raise money for a Theo’s ‘Wish to Walk’ initiative

Taking centre stage in the challenge, which was part of Slimming World’s national campaign ‘Slim For Good’, were Donna Randell and Rita Judd, who both live in Eastwood.

Donna, who is a close friend of Theo’s mother Melissa, nominated their cause after learning that the family had launched the campaign to raise £45,000 in order for Theo to undertake an operation which would dramatically transform his life.

Theo was due to have an operation at the QMC to help him walk, but when it was cancelled the family were left “devastated”

But they are pressing ahead with their fundraising.

“ We would like to raise the money before November 1, which is Theo’s fourth birthday because surgery is most effective in children of that age category” said Melissa.

To give the family a welcome boost, Donna and Rita were sponsored by Eastwood Slimming World members whose objective was to lose as much weight as possible during a six-week period in order to earn the sponsorship that members had pledged.

By their efforts and with generous donations by fellow slimmers Donna and Rita raised £450.

Collectively the Eastwood Slimming World members shed almost 22 stone in weight during their ‘Slim For Good’ campaign.

“It has been a phenomenal effort by my ladies and I am so proud of them,” said Mrs.Cooper.

“ Supporting Theo’s cause has given everyone a special focus and they have shown real commitment to their weight loss targets.

“I would like to say a big thank you to my members and in particular Donna and Rita who have gone the extra mile in their efforts to help this lovely little boy”
