AN ILKESTON gameshow contestant managed to sell 10p for nearly £7,000 after ‘spanking the banker’.

Kev King, of Quarry Hill Road, appeared on Channel Four’s Deal or No Deal on Thursday, where he opened boxes and pondered offers from the show’s mysterious banker.

After accepting an offer of £6,750 it turned out he had just 10p in his box, leading to congratulations from his fellow contestants at the ‘dream factory’ and host Noel Edmonds.

“It was a brilliant show,” said Kev, 47, “I really enjoyed it.”

Kev’s daughter Isabella, 18, helped him apply for the show last year.

He then had to go through months of gruelling interviews and auditions, involving trips up to Liverpool, until he finally received a phone call to say he had won a place on the show, where numbered boxes are picked to reveal different sums of money.

“That last conversation to tell me I’d won lasted 22 minutes, which is why I kept box number 22 until last,” he explained.

Kev opened boxes for 23 shows until it was his turn to be in the hotseat.

His best friend Scott Ryder was in the crowd cheering him on.

With the cash, Kev has bought his daughter’s insurance for her new car and a mobile phone for son George, aged 15.

He has also bought wife Flo a pet chihuahua and said he might treat himself to a new tattoo and put some away for a rainy day.

“It was an amazing experience,” he added.

“But you don’t want your friends on the show to go up there with a blue – it got really frustrating at times.”

Kev said he wanted to thank his boss at Progress Rail in Sandiacre, Paul Wheatley, and his neighbour Arthur Winston for their references for the show.
