A man has been charged with attempted theft after allegedly trying to steal a set of temporary traffic lights from a West Hallam junction.

Patrolling police officers claim they saw Dominic Abbott, of Broad Lane, Brinsley, trying to pull the set of lights away to a van on the corner of St Wilfrid’s Road and Scargill Road at about 1.40am on Thursday (September 26).

The suspect allegedly fled the scene.

A helicopter and police dogs were dispatched and Abbott was arrested shortly afterwards in a nearby hedge, police said.

The 20-year-old appeared before magistrates in Derby on Thursday afternoon charged with attempted theft.
