Construction work on a new Co-op is under way in this photograph.

A row of cottages had stood between the original store and Clarke’s.

In Kelly’s Directory of Nottinghamshire 1936, shops and businesses between Essex Street and Alexander Street in Eastwood were listed. They included Hector Cockburn vets, fried fish dealer Ronald Mervill, boot repairer Henry Towle, house agent Elisha Hopkin, plumber Fred Hopkin, tailor Alex Flett, shopkeeper Joseph Christian, greengrocer William Parkin, cycle repairer Herbert Greenhalgh, printer James Brown, shopkeeper Elizabth Hollymould, confectioner James Gregory, newsagent Gertrude M Platts and Clarke’s army stores to name a few.
