THE new Eastwood Youth Centre is now officially open after a ceremony attended by Nottinghamshire dignitaries.

County council chairman Keith Walker unveiled a special plaque and declared the site open alongside the Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, Sir Andrew Buchanan.

Councillors from the area also went along to the opening, along with teenagers who have been in instrumental in designing the building and deciding what services to offer.

The £2m centre – funded by Nottinghamshire County Council and the Government – will offer a coffee bar, meeting room, dance studio, music recording studio, computer workspaces and offices.

County council cabinet member for children and young people Philip Owen, said: “The fact that local young people have had such a big hand in the internal design of the building, the style of furnishings and what activities it will offer, means that they’ve taken real ownership of the project which, in itself, should guarantee that it’s well-used by young people in the area.”
