A NURSERY built up from scratch by an Underwood woman has been awarded an ‘outstanding’ rating across every area by Ofsted inspectors.
Linda Birkin who runs the Little Oaks Day Nursery in Kimberley sold her home and put her last penny on the line 14 years ago and said there were no words to describe what the review meant to her.
“To get outstanding in every single category just makes me so thrilled. Absolutely delighted.
“It’s an excellent achievement,” she added.
Ms Birkin’s husband built the nursery, and the couple lived in a flat upstairs with their young children for six years while it took off.
“I can’t think of anything better.
“When I look back it’s been hard work over the years, particularly when we lived there. We woke up at the nursery and went to bed at the nursery.
“I even did the cooking and the cleaning, and now that hard work has paid off. It means everything to us.”
The nursery owner said the success was down to her staff, and the ‘homely’ feel of the building.
“The success should be shared by all the staff,” she said.
“They are all very professional and genuinely caring. And that comes across. They are all brilliant.
“The building itself is beautiful and stimulating as well. It’s made from a converted farm building and it looks homely.”
Ms Birkin said the inspector had commented on how much of a ‘happy and caring’ atmosphere the High Street nursery had.
Little Oaks is open Monday to Saturday 8am until 6pm.
Three members of staff went to the nursery themselves when it first opened, and now teenagers, work there part time.
Ms Birkin additionally runs an after school club and holiday club at Larkfield Infant School in Nuthall.
The nursery is registered to cater for 72 children.
