OAPS warned over conmen

OAPs are being warned about a family of conmen who are targeting older people across the county.

Nottinghamshire County Council say that the group, whose names or trading name cannot be reported for legal reasons, account for about a quarter of all recent doorstep crime complaints received by the council’s trading standards team.

The men use a range of methods to gain the trust of their victims and to trick them into handing over cash.

Sarah Houlton, trading standards manager, said: “Our investigations into these unscrupulous conmen are on-going and we believe they are from the same family. It’s important that local people are aware of their sales tricks to prevent them from becoming the next victim.

“Their techniques are commonly used by other rogue traders but they all get their business by knocking on people’s doors, so our advice is always say no to doorstep salesmen no matter what they claim.

“People who fall foul of these individuals lose money and are often left with botched work which was either unnecessary or costs them more to rectify.”
