A PENSIONER took on the coast-to-coast challenge on his bike and completed it in seven hours.
Bill Pykett cycled 118 miles from Whitby to Whitehaven expecting it would take him about two days – but completed it in well under one.
“I surprised myself,” he said.
“I had no schedule, but after about an hour I had a feeling it wasn’t going to take me as long as I’d planned.
“I’m fitter than I thought!” he said.
Mr Pykett, 68, who lives in Brinsley, only got back on his bike two years ago after a 20-year break.
It was joining a spinning club in Hilltop, Eastwood that rekindled his passion for biking.
“I had no intentions of getting back on my bike when I started spinning classes,” he said.
“But it’s a challenge and something I’ve always wanted to do.
“I wanted to do it while I still had the enthusiasm and still could.
Mr Pykett has done the Great Nottinghamshire Bike Ride for the last two years, biking between 50 and 80 miles for charity and now goes out on his bike for an hour each week.
Back in the 1980s he cycled 960 miles from John O’ Groats to Lands End back and raised £1,800 for Guide Dogs for the Blind.
