Photographer’s inspiration from landmark

Student photographer Joanna Dale was so inspired by an Ilkeston landmark that she chose it as the centrepiece for her latest college project.

The talented 19-year-old from Cotmanhay recruited models from neighbouring Shipley and Codnor and snapped them in front of the Grade-II listed Bennerley Viaduct, one of the town’s most familiar sights.

She was tasked by her tutors at New College, Nottingham, to arrange the pictures in the style of Vogue, the well-known fashion magazine.

“I’ve grown up round here,” said Joanna, who is studying towards a BTEC in photography.

“Ever since I was little I used to go on walks round the viaduct with my dad, so it’s part of my childhood, really.

“It’s quite an interesting landmark from a photographer’s point of view – really interesting to use it as composition.”

Her models were Olivia Gibson, 19, from Shipley, and 18-year-old Michael Larkin, who lives in Codnor.

Joanna, who went to Jubilee House school in Stapleford and then Bilborough College, has another year left to study in Nottingham.
