Awsworth Primary and Nursery has launched it fifth annual 5k Fun Run.

Fun Run organiser, Ian Baxter and headteacher, Jane Mainprize, extended a warm welcome to Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry, charity fundraisers Deb and Shaun Lee, and comic book character Spongebob Squarepants at a special assembly.

This year’s fun run takes place on Sunday, April 24.

Mr Baxter revealed that the school would be supporting the Ryan Lee Trust with this year’ Fun Run as a tribute to the memory of brave Ryan who sadly passed away in May 2010.

He said: “Last year the Fun Run raised a fantastic £3,500 for the Lincs and Notts.Air Ambulance with more than 500 entrants taking part.

“We are hoping for a similar success this year and the school is urging everyone in the local community to spread the word and to come and join us for what we hope will be a fun-packed charity event.”

Shaun Lee, in the role of Spongebob Squarepants, was delighted by the childrens response when he entered the school hall.

He said: “Everyone was cheering and came and cuddled me and made me feel very special.

“My wife Deb has championed the charity since Ryan’s passing and we are both greatly humbled by the generosity of people of all ages who have dug deep to help our cause.

“As a treat for their special guests Awsworth’s pupils gave a display of dancing and singing putting everyone in good heart for the Charity Fun Run.

“We are hoping for a bumper turnout for the charity event and anyone wishing to take part should register by contacting the school on 0115 9321926.”
