A prolific Kirkby shoplifter escaped on his bike when he was chased by staff after stealing food.

Lee Walters, 34, of Pine Close, admitted stealing meat, coffee and deoderant worth £40 from the Co-Op store on Chapel Street, in Kirkby, on January 14.

Lee Shepherd, prosecuting, said Walters had 51 previous convictions for 134 offences, including 74 for theft.

The court heard Walters was captured on CCTV and he surrendered to police after they contacted him.

James Whyley, mitigating, said: “He’s not been in trouble since January 2015.

“He had a heroin problem from age 16 for many, many years. That’s when the majority of his convictions occurred. He was in and out of court. It’s not something he’s proud of.

“On this occasion he had fallen out with his partner and had been sleeping rough. He surrendered after police contacted him.

“He has changed. He hopes to start work soon and is due to be married in July.”

Magistrates fined him £40 and ordered him to pay £85 costs, £80 compensation and a £20 victim surcharge.
