Earlier this month I had an apppointment with a building society at 3.30 pm with a view to opening an account with them.
I have been a member of another building society for 43 years.
I duly turned up with four sets of identification, which were a current photo bus pass, current driving licence, current Derbyshire Tracker passbook and current council-tax demand with monthly payments.
I then filled in an application form but none of the items were accepteed by the staff member, even their own account passbook.
The staff member also claimed the council tax notice was not current issue, despite it showing the dates 2013-2014 and five payments, the most recent of which was July 2, which I think is quite current.
What happened next astonished, no, astounded me. On entering my nationality as English, he claimed that putting English was not acceptable. So, there you have it, in these days of hardship and shop and business closures, being English in England is not acceptable. They should put it on the aplication form and in the window to say ‘no English need apply’.
I have written to the company’s chief executive officer and I am awaiting a reply. I do apologise for being English.
