A TEENAGER has been arrested after a 12-year-old Ilkeston girl was the victim of an alleged serious sexual assault last week.
The 19-year-old was arrested and quizzed by police the day after the attack, which the girl says took place on Maws Lane in Kimberley late last Wednesday night.
The girl had gone to Kimberley to meet a friend when she says she was attacked by two men at around 10.30pm.
People living in the road where the assault happened said they were ‘horrified’ when they heard the news of what had happened.
Emily Atkinson said: “It’s just terrible. It gives you chills.
“It’s too close to home. You hear about it happening in other places but you never expect it on your doorstep.”
Sharon Louth’s front garden formed part of the police cordon, put in place across the grass bank where Maws Lane meets Lawn Mill Road.
She said police were at the scene all day last Thursday, the day after it happened, looking for clues.
“The forensics lady spent a long time on the grass bank and there were quite a few police men trawling through everything on my front garden and looking for things,” she said.
“My heart goes out to the poor girl. It’s awful,” she added.
Janet Sharpe who lives opposite the scene said: “Nothing surprises me any more.”
Last week police released descriptions of two people. They are still keen to trace a black male, described as muscular, aged about 19 and over 6ft tall. He was wearing a bandana.
A Kimberley town councillor has since appealed to Nottinghamshire County Council to keep all of the town’s street lights switched on.
