TEENAGERS in Nuthall’s Boys’ Brigade have passed their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.
Ben Tantum, Nathan Saunders, Tom Middleton, David John, Adam Smith and George Maloney all went to Jamaica last year to take part in a school building project as part of the process to win the award.
They helped to build a dining room, did labouring work and painting, and spent time with orphan children and villagers whose lives had been torn apart by war and malnutrition.
Having already achieved their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards, the trip to Jamaica’s Pineapple School helped the boys on their way to achieving the Gold award.
Other challenges included expeditions, community service work, physical education and courses in residential and care support.
The six lads were handed their awards at a special ceremony at St James’s Palace in London.
Group captain Dave Tantum said: “The boys have shown tremendous determination and courage in achieving their objectives.”
