Former Prime Minister, the late Margaret Thatcher, is captured here during a visit to Moorgreen pit in the mid-1980s.

Thatcher, who was occupying 10 Downing Street at the time, was at the colliery to see how it worked and as a general ‘morale booster’.

Gillian Winfield, who submitted the photo, said: “She went underground to have a look at the conditions and how the men worked.

“The visit was a general morale-boosting exercise .

“I think it was when the pits were going through a tough time,” she added.

Gillian’s husband Tony worked at Moorgreen pit for 15 years until it closed in the late 80s.
