Pictured here is a happy group of Land Army girls.

They are pictured with their foreman taking a break from picking plums on a farm at Surfleet in 1944.

Vera Kirkham from Eastwood is second from the right on the front row.

Vera volunteered to join the Women’s Land Army in August 1941.

Her first posting was to Kinoulton, south of Nottingham, where she lived with 30 other girls.

Vera went to Walker Street School in Eastwood, leaving in 1934.

Before joining the Women’s Land Army she worked as a machinist in Basford.
