EASTWOOD Town first XI rounded off a very successful season on Saturday with an 18-point winning draw against neighbours Kimberley second XI.
Taking first knock for a change Eastwood's two openers Steven Leese and Shaun Stocks made a promising start but with the score at 41 Leese was out stumped by Adam Meads and Stocks followed seven runs later having scored a solid 25.
Skipper Neil Greg
ory (71) and Stuart Hill (83) shared a stand of 114 before Gregory was out at 162 in the 35th over.
Hill, joined by Michael Cook (31) piled in the last 13 overs and the final total was 260-6.
Steve Bennett, with figures of 3 for 52, was the pick of Kimberley's bowlers.
In reply, Eastwood made an excellent start with Omer Awan bowling both Kimberley's openers in his first three overs, with just eight runs scored.
Despite scores of 34 by skipper Andy Platts, James Griffiths' 25 and Craig Pitts' 30, Eastwood had a good control of the game at 92-7 and 120-8 with 19 overs left.
But then nothing is certain in cricket and a fine rearguard action by Richard Adams (29), Dominic Wheatley (29 not out) and Luke Tantum (11 not out) saved a losing draw for Kimberley at 192-9 and eight points.
In total Eastwood have won nine, drawn four and lost one match this season, scoring 250 points out of a maximum of 280.
Second team collapse to defeat against Casuals
Eastwood Town's second XI finished off their topsy-turvy season with a disappointing 37 run defeat against Notts Unity Casuals.
Casuals batted first on a sunny day at the Brian Wakefield Memorial Ground and initially looked to regret this decision as the Eastwood opening bowlers tore through their top order.
Just nine overs in and Notts Unity were reeling at 33-4. James Longden was in superb form with the ball, taking three out of the first four wickets, with Jordon Lee claiming the other wicket. Just a few overs later and Longden took his fourth, dismissing Qayyum for 19.
Unity then lost another quick wicket, with Luke Elderkin entering the bowling attack and enjoying instant success. At 50 for 6, it was hard to see them posting a reasonable total.
Wajid and Azad knuckled down at the crease and patiently built a vital partnership, putting on 37 runs in just over 15 overs. Both departed for 16 in the 34th over, and spinner Steve Dockrell took a wicket in the very next one to leave Unity 87 for 9.
Eastwood should really have taken advantage and claimed the final wicket as quickly as possible, but some indifferent bowling meant that numbers 10 and 11 batted until the very final ball, putting on 39 for the final wicket as Notts Unity ended their innings 126 all out.
Durrent batted very well during ths period to finish 16 not out. It should be noted it was Longden who got the wicket with the last ball, recording figures of 5 for 33 from 11 overs.
Eastwood needed to get off to a good start in their pursuit of Unity's 126, especially with the batting order being lighter than in previous weeks.
They looked to be on course after the first five overs, scoring 15 runs with loss and seeing off the dangers of the new ball. However 15-0 quickly became 18-3 and Eastwood's innings was in turmoil.
Only Jordon Lee was able to offer any resistance, scoring quickly against the Casuals attack, and he found some support in the guise of Nick Elderkin.
Lee and Elderkin appeared to be moving well towards the target before Elderkin was dismissed somewhat against the run of play for five, with the score on 59.
Eastwood were still 67 runs short of their target, but another partnership would have seen Eastwood get very close to their target.
But there proved to be no more partnerships, and Lee was just a spectator as wickets fell in quick succession at the other end. Qayyum picked up five wickets at a cost of just four runs as Eastwood were skittled out for 89, with Lee the ninth wicket to fall on an agonising 49.
Eastwood finish the season in eighth place, but were comfortably above the relegation battle in the end.
Next season will need to see a massive improvement in the batting in order to compete at the top end of the table.
With the first team promoted back into Division A, there is the possibility of extra players being recruited and a more balanced team for 2009.
