Badgers Briefings with Paddy Farrell
FOLLOWING the defeat to Guiseley on Tuesday, tomorrow (Saturday 28th) will be another vital step in Eastwood Town's determined pursuit of the UniBond Premier League title.
Our opponent in successive home fixtures will be Kendal Town whose recent resurgence has rekindled an ambition to participate in the promotion play-off competition.
Having failed to gain revenge for losing at Guiseley earlier in the season, tomorrow will see Eastwood again aim to prevent a ‘double’ being achieved, following defeat at Kendal earlier in the season.
Kick-off is 3pm.
Next Tuesday (March 31, 7.30pm) we are due at Rainworth Miners Welfare for our county Senior Cup quarter-final tie which will, of course, be played to a finish with extra-time and penalties if necessary.
The prospect of a rare home draw against Carlton Town in the semis should be a spur to retaining our long term custody of the handsome trophy.
Confusion at the original fixtures issue stage has bedevilled our Easter holiday commitments all season.
Let me again emphasise our first team programme - Good Friday (April 10) - Ilkeston Town v Eastwood Town (7.45pm). Easter Monday (April 13) - Eastwood Town v Frickley Athletic (3pm)
Our reserves kept up pressure on the top teams in the Midlands Regional Alliance Premier Division with a 5-1 home win over struggling Belper United last Saturday.
Tomorrow, Sam Ralph’s charges could have a harder task when visiting Holbrook St Michaels. Kick-off is 3pm and the hosts are in seventh place.
I’m sure every Eastwood Town fan will want to thank Kris ‘Kiwi’ Mathews for some great displays in central defence last season and be disappointed at the lad’s reluctant decision to leave Coronation Park.
It looks as if Kris is considering a return to his native New Zealand, and, whatever his decision, we wish him every success.
Congratulations to Richard Cooper and his wife Laura, who, after constant false alarms, finally produced a daugher, Neve, last weekend.
Another very late departure from Coronation Park is Wayne Diuk, who looked a very capable defender or midfielder before injuries ruined his season.
Wayne has been playing, on a dual registration basis, for Corby Town but Paul Cox has agreed to cancel his UniBond registration to allow him to help out Division One South outfit Shepshed Dynamo.
Thanks Wayne for your contribution to a great season - you will always be welcome at ‘Coro’!
Regular readers will know I’ve never been a fan of the licence of anonymity which allows so-called fans to criticise anyone at Coronation Park from chairman down without having to establish any background of knowledge or experience.
With what Rob Yong, Paul Cox, John Ramshaw and their staff have accomplished this season, one would expect our website forum to be a solid mass of praise and appreciation.
Our attendances show that the huge majority of Badgers share my gratitude to the people who have given us this unique experience and I so hope that Rob, especially, does not allow the occasional sniping contributor to discourage his goal of Conference football.
The mere fact of identifying the source would lend some validity to the comments - however one-sided.
