Mixed day for Millers’ Holmes in drawn game

Langley Mill Utd CC’s first team entertained Sandiacre second team at Station Road on Saturday but could not find the formula for a win in this Derbyshire County Cricket League Division Two encounter.

The Millers were asked to bat first and after the third ball Neil Wing (four) was out with an excellent low catch off Marlow’s bowling.

Jay Holmes joined Paul Bailey and these two consolidated before Bailey was bowled by Harper for 25.

This seemed to be how the game was going with the Millers’ batsmen starting partnerships but not consolidating them.

They found themselves 116-5 and looking unlikely to post a larger score.

Jay Holmes batted patiently and made an excellent 52 before being bowled by Taylor.

Hanson (21), Wharton (17), Scott (25) and Harrison (24 not out) added some late runs to take the Millers to a competitive 202 all out in the last over.

Taylor was the pick of the bowlers for Sandiacre with figures of 4 -54 from his 14 overs.

In reply, Sandiacre never looked like going for the runs and they patiently batted out for a draw.

Thimal set the ball rolling with a direct hit to run out Domleo.

This brought Murfin to the crease and he ground out 50 not out to make the game secure for Sandiacre.

The Millers tried several options with the ball and this worked with Holmes, Thimal and Wharton all picking up wickets.

The game ended in a draw with Sandiacre finishing on 146 for 5.

The downside of the day was that Jay Holmes had a visit to hospital after splitting the webbing on his right hand after taking a marvellous return catch during the Sandiacre reply.

This will probably keep him out for the remainder of the season.

These points consolidate the Millers’ third place in the division and for their latest game they will visit South Wingfield next week, who have had some good results of late.
