Leaders Ferriby prove too strong
Eastwood Town 0 North Ferriby Utd 5
League leaders North Ferriby United showed little mercy to bottom side Eastwood on Saturday with a rampant victory at Coronation Park.
The quagmire of a pitch could have proved to be a great leveller but as it transpired it was the visitors’ quality that shone through, the Badgers working hard but with little to show for it.
Getting the game on was the first achievement of the day, although on arrival at the ground Ferriby weren’t keen to play at all given the sodden nature of the pitch.
But some strategically placed sand and lots of manpower shifted most of the water and the match went ahead.
The Badgers then probably wished it hadn’t.
That was despite a fairly bright opening where Matt Harris, with a shot from distance palmed away by keeper Adam Nicklin, and Lavell White, whose header from the subsequent corner was just too high, both went close to putting the hosts in front.
But Ferriby struck on ten minutes when a counter-attack saw Anthony Wilson sent through the middle and he squared for Ryan Williams who had time to control and fire in from close range.
The second goal came nine minutes later when a good move ended with Chris Bolder being found in the penalty area and he finished low into the net despite keeper Richard Stainsby getting a hand to the ball.
That was to be the end of the scoring for the first-half although the visitors did go close to a third on several occasions, Liam King’s long-range shot saved by Stainsby, Bolder heading a free-kick too high and Wilson flicking Danny Clarke’s cross just wide.
Bolder then hit the post in stoppage time with a header from a left wing corner.
The second-half saw a similar pattern in terms of chances, Kendall firing just wide and Romaine Graham heading against his own crossbar.
Eastwood fashioned a good opening on 61 minutes when White did well down the right before finding sub Greg Simmons on the penalty spot but he put the ball over the bar.
That would prove costly as Ferriby then went on to seal the win in comfortable style.
On 64 minutes another counter sent Ryan Kendall away who rounded Stainsby and finished well from a narrow angle.
Chris Shaw’s header straight at Nicklin and Simmons’ free-kick from out wide being tipped over was as close as the Badgers would get to registering.
But two more late goals rounded things off as first Williams finished well after another burst forward and then Kendall notched his second in stoppage time after again being sent clear.
