Shaw laments Eastwood’s crucial lack of firepower

Chris Shaw says finding a source of goals will be key if Eastwood Town are to avoid relegation from the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

The Badgers’ player/manager feels most aspects of his side’s game are coming together quite well, but that the crucial lack of goals could end up being most costly.

And reflecting on a 2-0 defeat at Rushall Olympic last weekend, Shaw felt that problem was magnified over the 90 minutes.

He said: “We’re defending well and looking quite strong as a unit in that sense, but the lack of quality up front means we’re defending too much and you can’t do that for 90 minutes and expect to win games.

“More goals may seem an obvious solution when trying to win games but it’s the missing piece in the jigsaw at the moment, in that I’m happy with the rest of the team and I think if we can just create more up front then we’ll be able to earn more points.”

Shaw felt the defeat at Rushall was harsh on his side who he believed had matched their opponents physically throughout.

He added: “We started quite slowly but were just finding our feet when a sloppy goal set us back.

“We threw everything at them early in the second-half but then the penalty, which I thought was harsh, made it 2-0 and in our current situation, coming back from that was going to be difficult.”

With the goalscoring issue in mind, Shaw has recruited former Corby team-mate Greg Smith from Stafford Rangers, although recent acquisition Martin Ormesher has had to leave the club.

Shaw said: “Greg’s a big lad with goals in him and should give us some much-needed firepower.

“Martin unfortunately is based quite a long way away and underestimated the travelling involved so he’s had to leave, but we also brought in Joe Flint from Mansfield, who scored quite a few goals in a spell with Hucknall last season, which again should help us.”

Shaw also revealed that approaches for midfielder Danny Elliott have been made from higher level clubs and that the youngster could be set for a move.

He added: “Danny’s a talented player and deserves a chance at a higher level, so we’ll see how the talks go.”
