Late Gingerbreads goal denies Badgers victory

Eastwood Town 2 Grantham Town 2

A late goal from Nathan Watson denied Eastwood a rare victory as Grantham Town earned a 2-2 draw at Coronation Park on Easter Monday.

It was harsh on Eastwood who had fought back from a goal down to lead thanks to strikes from Jake Green and Sam Winch, but relegation-threatened Grantham, who had several ex-Badgers in their squad, snatched a share of the points late on.

Grantham started well although their only efforts of note in the opening quarter-of-an-hour was Gregg Smith - a recent signing from Eastwood - heading over and Kallum Smith’s free-kick deflecting wide.

Romaine Graham had the Badgers’ first major chance with a shot just too high on 25 minutes, before Dominic Allen struck a post moments later as the Badgers looked to gain the lead.

But that honour was to fall to Grantham on 29 minutes, as Smith found Rhys Lewis and he drove the ball high past debutant keeper Alex Malong to put the visitors in front.

The equaliser came five minutes later, as a ball forward was only cleared to Chris Shaw and the player/manager beat three opponents before hitting a shot that Jake Turner could only parry to Jake Green who slotted home the rebound.

The Badgers then took the lead early in the second-half.

Winch turned another ex-Badger in the form of Adie Hawes on the edge of the penalty area before rifling an effort into the top corner for his first Badgers goal.

Shaw saw a free-kick parried away by Turner, and then Malong got lucky at the other end after spilling a Jordan Smith shot and seeing Gregg Smith poke the ball home, only for a foul to be given on the keeper.

A triple substitution by Grantham bosses Gary Sucharewycz and Ian Robinson aided their cause, Sam MacVicar in particular causing problems including seeing a shot across the face of goal go past the post.

From a corner, Allen had to clear off the line when MacVicar then won a header at a corner, before Danny Elliott crossed for Gio Carchedi whose volley was cleared.

But it only got as far as Deon Meikle whose cross into the box found Watson who controlled before firing past Malong to make it 2-2 on 85 minutes.

Eastwood then had to hold on in the dying minutes as the visitors pushed for a winner, MacVicar (twice) and Jordan Smith both going close, but the Badgers held firm and took a welcome point.
