Two controversial moments denied the Badgers a morale-boosting victory at home to Chasetown on Saturday.

Firstly, striker Tris Whitman sent over a cross that Bradley Munn struck superbly into the corner of the goal, only to see the linesman flagging that the ball had gone out of play.

Then, late in the second-half, substitute Greg Simmons knocked the ball down inside the box from Chris Shaw’s free kick, and Tyrone Kirk outpaced his marker to prod the ball home, this time the linesman putting his flag up for offside.

However, both decisions were marginal, with the first being made by a linesman struggling to keep up with play.

The Badgers had to make several changes through injury, suspensions and unavailability which meant debuts for new signings Richard Hanslow and Tyrone Kirk.

Both teams started the game tentatively with Leigh Downing having the first real shot in anger in the 17th minute. However the Chasetown winger shot well wide after the ball had fizzed around the Eastwood box.

Hanslow should have celebrated his first game for the Badgers with a goal after he linked up well with Munn but his stinging shot was a nice height for the keeper to parry to safety.

Liam Garner missed a half chance and Nick Wellecomme scuffed his volley from inside the Badgers box, before Lee Butler’s cross-shot was close enough to have Eastwood keeper Alex Malong diving full length as the visitors started to gain the upper hand.

Malong was called into action again soon after to push Wellecomme’s goal bound effort around the post, before there was a break in play after an accidental collision between Malong and Paul Sullivan resulting in the latter taking no further part in the game.

The second-half started with Kirk curling a shot high and wide before Wellecomme really should have put the visitors in front in the 52nd minute by sprinting clear but Malong produced a great save to keep his goal intact.

Captain for the day in Gavin Hurren’s absence was Sam Craven and he played leader’s role to produce an outstanding tackle to deny Wellecomme.

Munn curled a shot wide and Malong saved theatrically to deny Chasetown substitute Danny Smith.

The Badgers finished the game strongly when a Shaw free-kick into the crowded box saw the ball break to Craven but his shot was blocked, then Simmons lifted the ball over the bar when presented with a really good chance two minutes from the end.
