Gary McSheffrey admits the win over his former club was a huge confidence boost for the Iron players.

United have endured a disappointing start to their League One campaign following last season’s promotion.

Tuesday night’s 2-1 victory over Coventry City was just Scunthorpe’s second win of the season.

McSheffrey captained United during the City clash as Lyle Taylor and Paddy Madden’s strikes cancelled out Frank Nouble’s 17th minute opener.

“It’s great to be back to winning ways and it was a huge win for the boys,” said McSheffrey who returned to Coventry between 2010 and 2013 after starting out as a trainee there.

“Coming back from being 1-0 down with both strikers scoring is a quality confidence boost for the team and hopefully we can take this into Saturday’s game.”

He went on: “Their goal was the first proper opportunity of the game so it was disappointing to concede.

“However, we were playing well up until then and I always felt we’d get back into it and the game changed after the sending off.”
