Welfare hold table-toppers to a draw

Hyson Green Cavaliers 1

Greasley MW U14 1

GREASLEY produced a good performance to earn a point at the current league leaders Hyson Green.

Welfare were the better side for much of the first-half with Sam Meakin, Joe Coxon and Robbie Manners all going close.

Then, against the run of play, the home side was allowed far too much space inside the Welfare area and an unchallenged attacker calmly netted from ten yards.

The game then became more even and James Fogg saved well when another unmarked player burst through.

Moments later Cavaliers hit the bar from an acute angle and the half ended with a Meakin free-kick which only wanted someone to get on the end of to score.

The home side started the brighter in the second period and Greasley took a while to get back into it.

This left Tom Stockton and Ste Hatherley to earn their corn with numerous tackles and with Craig Mutch and Sam Brown throwing themselves into every challenge the back four remained solid.

Greasley made a tactical change bringing on Aaron Coyle to partner Josh Baker up front and within minutes the substitute made an impact by crossing for Baker to head home, but the ball was ruled to have crossed the touchline in the build-up and play was brought back.

But Baker did provide the equaliser midway through the half, racing onto a loose ball to slot past the keeper.

In the end the scoreline remained level and but for the poor decision from the ref all the points should have gone to Greasley.
