Good display but no points for Eastwood at Boston United

Monday, August 30, 2010 Blue Square Bet North BOSTON UNITED 1 EASTWOOD TOWN 0

THE Badgers thoroughly deserved a point having had the better of the few chances on offer in this Bank Holiday encounter in Lincolnshire.

However, it was league new boys Boston United who continued their fine start to the season leaving the Eastwood management team wondering just what they have to do to pick up points on the road.

Fresh from securing their first points of the season, there was a surprise inclusion on the team sheet before the game, with ex Tamworth midfielder Gavin Hurren having signed since the weekend, appearing on the bench.

Striker Matt Rhead was forced to miss the game through work commitments, allowing Lee Stevenson to make his second start of the season.

The Badgers started brightly and forced two corners in the opening minutes. Jamie Yates shot was tipped around the post as the Pilgrims replied.

A moment of magic almost produced the opening goal, when Stevenson flicked a header on to Muller, who laid the ball back into the midfielder's path and his 35 yarder cannoned off the crossbar before the home defence managed to scramble clear.

Former Forest player Spencer Weir-Daley wasted a good chance from a corner then Ryan Semple's shot was well wide.

Stevenson tried an audacious shot from wide right after seeing James McKeown off his line.

Unfortunately, he couldn't get the height allowing home the keeper to save comfortably.

Moments later Riley's cross-cum-shot was caught under the bar by United keeper McKeown.

The Pilgrims got the breakthrough and what eventually proved to be the winner in the 28th minute when David Haggerty defended Yates's telling cross at the expense of a corner.

Eastwood keeper John Danby was injured in the incident and needed several minutes' treatment.

When the corner was finally taken Boston defender Shaun Pearson rose highest to head home from eight yards.

Seven minutes later, Pearson handled on the edge of the box. Although Stevenson's initial shot hit the wall, the ball broke to Adam Muller who forced McKeown into a fine save with a stinging shot.

At the start of the second half Muller escaped his marker and ran 20 yards into the box but couldn't control his shot.

Shortly after, Stevenson headed over after a patient build up and Russell Cooke's header drifted wide from Todd's corner.

The Pilgrims strike force fresh from thrashing Redditch (9-0) and Harrogate (6-3), were being superbly marshalled by the uncompromising Haggerty.

Gavin Hurren tested the Boston keeper with his first touch after replacing Anton Foster on 56 minutes.

At the other end Jamie Yates snatched at a shot when well placed and fired over.

Although Boston were enjoying a lot of the ball they were not creating any noteworthy efforts on goal.

Substitute TJ Nightingale should have given the Badgers a share of the spoils in the 76th minute.

Latching onto Pearson's weak header, he just needed to steer the ball past McKeown and into the empty goal.

Opting to chip it, he could only hit the ball into the grateful keeper's hands.

There were a few nervous moments at both ends. Hurren went close, heading Duncum's cross towards the corner, but the keeper made a good save and Boston held on to take the points.
