Another late goal costs Badgers dear

Eastwood striker Lavell White is thwarted by Marine keeper Callum Williams during the defeat at Coronation Park on Saturday

Eastwood Town 1 Marine 2

Marine became the latest club to stage a smash and grab raid at Coronation Park, but the Badgers had only themselves to blame and should have wrapped the game up by half time.

With player manager Chris Shaw, his assistant Mitch Hanson and Matt Harris all suspended there were returns for Danny Mitchell and Ewan Clarke with Jake Green moving to wing back.

And Eastwood had a dream start when Matty Brown was adjudged to have fouled Lavell White in the penalty area within 30 seconds of the kick-off. Paolo Piliero scored confidently from the spot to open his account for the club.

Marine’s on-loan striker Danny Mitchley wriggled free of his marker but keeper Richard Stainsby was equal to his shot, before Matty Brown’s effort was well saved as Marine tried to respond immediately.

Liam Dawson then fired wide while at the other end John Shaw did well to prevent Piliero from adding to his tally.

Dawson had a good chance to get the Mariners on level terms, but with Stainsby off his line he failed to get enough lift on the ball leaving the Eastwood custodian with a simple catch.

Man-of-the-Match Joel Holland caused Marine untold problems down the wing in the first half. In the 23rd minute striker White failed to capitalise on an inviting cross, guiding his header wide of the post.

After some good interchange play, Clarke’s final shot was disappointing and White fired wide soon afterwards.

Eastwood were enjoying the better of the exchanges and really should have been two or three goals to the good by this stage. Just after the half hour mark, White again failed to convert an excellent Holland cross.

The Badgers were then dealt a huge blow in the 40th minute when Clarke dislocated an ankle tackling a Marine player, needing hospital attention.

The visitors came out in the second-half looking more like a team near the top of the league. Dawson fired in a volley which was just wide of the upright and Mitchley was just wide after cutting in from the left.

Eastwood substitute Vijay Selvam saw his shot smothered on the line by the keeper in a rare foray into the Marine half but the visitors were soon on level terms.

A through ball saw several Eastwood defenders appealing for offside but the flag stayed down and Dawson poked the ball past Stainsby and into the net.

Both teams had glorious chances to win the game. Selvam played in White who went around the keeper but his shot was smothered on the line, then Marine sub Nick Rogan found himself free but couldn’t control the ball allowing Josh Raven to recover and clear.

But with the Badgers chasing three points, Marine switched the ball to the other end where Mitchley cut in from the right and fired home an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box for the winner.
